How to build a 4000 square meter sports arena in Argentina?

Canglong Group has designed a modern 4000 square meter sports arena for its Argentine clients. This large-span venue, measuring 100 meters in length, 40 meters in width, and 12 meters in height, will become a new landmark for community sports in Argentina. Unlike the inefficient mode of on-site formwork support, pouring, and maintenance in traditional sports halls, its construction has been marked with industrialization from the beginning. Yirong Steel Structure takes a one-stop solution as its core, using Q355B H-beam frame, hot-dip galvanized C-shaped steel maintenance system, and precision machining with intelligent welding robots, turning the three major goals of large-span, fast construction, and high quality into a tangible reality.

Large span design

The core challenge of the sports hall lies in the large space without columns. The 100 meter by 40 meter internal court needs to accommodate basketball courts, fitness areas, and even small stages. The short span limit of traditional concrete structures (usually ≤ 20 meters) is completely broken here. The design team of Yirong Steel Structure has chosen Q355B H-beam as the main material for beams and columns, with a yield strength of 355MPa (higher than ordinary steel) and a golden ratio of section height to flange width (such as HN600 × 200 × 11 × 17), which can ensure the overall bending stiffness of the structure and reduce its own weight by optimizing the thickness of the web plate.

More importantly, the I-shaped cross-section of H-beams is naturally compatible with bolted connections. All beam column interfaces are designed with high-strength bolts (grade 8.8) pre assembled, and there is no need for welding on site. Simply align the holes and tighten them to complete the node fixation. This modular framework not only reduces the amount of on-site work, but also avoids the quality hazard of hole deviation requiring hole expansion in traditional construction through millimeter level precision control of bolt hole positions by the factory (error ≤ 0.5mm).

Yirong’s one-stop solution

Yirong Steel Structure’s one-stop service began in the early stages of the project. Based on the local climate characteristics of Argentina (tropical grassland climate, average annual precipitation of 800mm, high temperature and humidity in summer) and building codes (such as seismic fortification intensity of 7 degrees and fire protection level B1), the technical team, together with Argentine engineers, optimized the structural scheme:

  • Main frame: Q355B H-shaped steel beams and columns are connected using a combination of rigid and hinged connections, ensuring overall stability while reducing foundation loads.
  • Maintenance system: Hot dip galvanized C-shaped steel (with a zinc layer thickness of ≥ 180g/㎡) is selected for the roof and walls as the tension and purlins, combined with a 150mm thick glass wool insulation layer and a 0.5mm thick color steel plate outer layer to form a three in one insulation, heat insulation, and anti-corrosion enclosure structure, suitable for humid environments with large temperature differences (day night temperature difference of 15 ℃) in the local area.
  • Supporting facilities: Bolts, self tapping screws, waterproof sealant and other auxiliary materials are customized according to Argentine standards (IRAM), and even temporary support frames required for on-site installation are prefabricated into standard modules in the factory in advance.
Factory prefabrication

In the intelligent factory of Yirong located in Henan, the framework of this sports hall is being carved with industrial grade precision.

  • H-beam processing: from steel plate cutting to automatic assembly and welding, the entire process is completed by intelligent welding robots. These robots are equipped with visual recognition systems that can automatically scan the edges of steel plates, adjust current, voltage, and welding speed to ensure uniform weld penetration and no porosity or slag inclusion. The rework rate of traditional manual welding is about 5%, while the qualification rate of robot welding is as high as 99.8%.
  • Pre assembly of components: All beams, columns, and purlins undergo 1:1 virtual pre assembly before leaving the factory (simulated on-site installation through BIM software), and the dimensional deviation of key nodes is detected by a 3D coordinate measuring instrument to ensure that the perpendicularity of the flange plate and web plate of each H-beam is ≤ 1mm/m, and the perpendicularity of the column body is ≤ H/1500 (H is the column height).
  • Protective treatment: The surface of H-beam is treated with shot blasting rust removal, epoxy zinc rich primer, and polyurethane topcoat technology, with a corrosion resistance period of more than 25 years. Hot dip galvanized C-shaped steel is additionally sprayed with fireproof coating (fire resistance limit ≥ 1.5 hours) outside the galvanized layer, providing dual protection against possible fire risks in the local area.

From intelligent welding of Q355B H-beam to anti-corrosion protection of hot-dip galvanized C-shaped steel. Yirong Steel Structure proves with a one-stop solution that the power of industrialization can not only shorten construction periods and reduce costs, but also deliver a safe, durable, and locally adapted modern sports arena for emerging markets like Argentina. When this 4000 square meter large-span venue is finally completed, it will not only be a building, but also a deep integration sample of Chinese steel structure technology and global demand.
